Niv: Can you tell me about the importance of the sketches in your process?

Kyle: I do little detailed studies for each of my works. I doodle all the time. Sometimes there is one master drawing, or it'll be a couple of drawings stitched together. Once I have an idea of an image, I make a little mini painting. I do that in order to find out how to physically mix the colors, and to match the color to the specific image. For me the studies are an emotionally charged base. I don’t slavishly follow the sketches; it just helps. Because it’s not oil on canvas, you only have so many chances to paint it. If you mess up you have to make the whole relief again.
